A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
