Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
