The defendant confessed to 17 charges at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

A man who spiked sweets with sleeping medication and distributed them to children at a summer program in the area has admitted sexual offences against two children both between nine and ten.

The defendant was detained after eight minors and an older person became sick at the location in July.

The 76-year-old, from that region, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on Friday.

However, he refused to admit one particular crime he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old child.

The accused was kept in jail before a additional proceeding on late November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She said his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a summer program which he managed.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel said, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and request they to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the defendant had played this game with the children "for many years", and minors had previously become sick the next day.

She said the man had been able to explain this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in recently.

Mrs Prior KC added: "In the summer" his stepchild had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They decided to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said items including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepchild contacted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She stated Ruben continued to engage in the "sweet game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"The police had not arrived by that time," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The legal representative explained the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the police again.

She explained the defendant then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five youngsters.
