Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
